The experiences, aspirations and challenges facing early-career professionals across the social housing sector have been revealed in a new report.

Drawing on the views of more than 900 young housing professionals across the UK, the Voices of the Future report from CIH Futures is the largest study of its kind. It provides invaluable insights on how the next generation experiences their work, sees their future, and envisions a stronger, fairer housing sector.

The findings reaffirm the passion that drives the early career professionals. Young people working in housing are highly motivated by social purpose, committed to supporting residents and communities, and eager to build long, meaningful careers. However, the research also highlights areas where the sector must do more – including improving career visibility, strengthening progression pathways, investing in leadership support and prioritising wellbeing.

The findings highlight both the strength and strain of housing’s future workforce. To attract and retain talent, housing must:

  • Make itself visible and actively promote housing as a career of choice
  • Value young professionals’ voices – listen, act, and involve them in decision-making
  • Provide consistency and fairness – in pay, progression, and wellbeing support
  • Invest in good management – ensuring line managers have the time and training to develop and empower their teams
  • Foster inclusive networks – creating more opportunities for young people to collaborate, learn, and lead.
