Are you interested in helping to set up, or being part of, a Tenant Steering Group which will oversee new research on sustaining social housing tenancies? Find out how to get involved at this introductory meeting with the team from Sheffield Hallam University.

What is the research?

The research is looking into tenancy sustainment in social housing. It is paying particular attention to identifying the causes of rent arrears, as this is the main reason why tenancies fail. It focuses on the experiences of tenants receiving Universal Credit or Housing Benefit. The research will provide evidence and guidance which will improve landlords’ tenancy sustainment policies and practices, making it easier for tenants to pay their rent and fewer tenancies failing. The study, which began in March, runs until May 2024.

Who is carrying out the research?

The research is being carried-out by a team based at Sheffield Hallam University, which is supported by the Chartered Institute of Housing, Qa Research and HQN. The research is being funded by the Nuffield Foundation.

What is the Tenant Steering Group? And how will it work? And what will members be expected to do?

The group will oversee the work of the Sheffield Hallam team, providing it with guidance at key points of the study. The group will convene no more than five times over the course of the study.

Meetings will be held online. They will be coordinated by Rob Gershon and the team from HQN. The views of members will be sought on a range of issues including the approach taken to the research and written outputs.
