Grenfell

Two years on from the Phase 1 recommendations from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, Grenfell United are calling on government to action some of the recommendations.

The group representing survivors and bereaved families said it was “shocking” that not a single recommendation has been actioned yet.

In a statement, the group said: “The lasting legacy of Grenfell must be meaningful structural change. Our 72 will not be remembered for what happened, but for the change our country so desperately needs.

“We are calling on the Chair of the Grenfell Inquiry Sir Martin Moore-Bick to urgently call in those responsible for his Inquiry’s Phase 1 recommendations to report on their progress. Without it, very little can change and another Grenfell is an all too real reality.

“We lost 72 of our loved ones in the most horrifying way. A fire that the Public Inquiry has evidenced to be predictable & preventable. Yet today, 2 years on from phase 1 recommendations of the public Inquiry very little if anything has changed.

“Had Government not ignored the recommendations from the Lakanal House Fire in 2009, it would be very likely 72 innocent people would still be here. What’s even more shocking is government still haven’t actioned a single recommendation leaving 000’s living in real danger.

“The Public Inquiry found the Grenfell cladding to have “a heat of combustion similar to that of petrol or diesel fuel”. Yet Hundreds of buildings in the UK are still wrapped in it, with leaseholders burdened with the cost.

“Grenfell exposed a national and global building safety crisis. Yet, despite this, the London Fire Brigade’s “stay put” policy remains for all tenants living in dangerous high rise blocks.

“They heard how we warned our landlord of serious concerns but were silenced, bullied and ignored which contributed to Grenfell Yet the government still fails to implement the Social Housing White Paper which means the same ill-treatment of social housing tenants continues.

“We will not stop until we see Truth, Justice and systemic change, for the legacy of our 72 loved ones and for those people who continue to live in fear that they might suffer the same fate.”
