Jon Sparkes has announced that he is to step down from the role of Chief Executive at Crisis, as he moves to a CEO role with UNICEF UK.

Sparkes has been CEO at the homeless charity Crisis since 2014, and originally joined from UNICEF.

He’s also has wide-ranging non-executive experience in charities and social enterprises, and has led and participated in several projects on behalf of governments, including as Chair of the Scottish Government’s Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Advisory Group, Chair of the Welsh Government’s Homelessness Action Group, and as a member of the UK Government’s Rough Sleeping Advisory Panel.

Tristia Harrison, Chair of Trustees at Crisis, said: “I want to thank Jon for his skill, passion and tireless work to tackle homelessness over the last seven years.

“Whilst the whole board of trustees and I are sad to lose Jon, it is also clear that nothing will divert us from our mission to end homelessness. Crisis is in a robust position, with financial stability now and into the future and a talented staff team throughout the organisation. Crisis is exceptionally well run, and the next chief executive will inherit a highly-motivated group of colleagues and supporters.

“The recruitment process for our next chief executive will begin in September, and I look forward to the next phase of our journey towards ending homelessness for good.”

Sparkes said: “Leaving Crisis will be a huge wrench. We have achieved so much together over the last seven years, and I am certain that Crisis will continue to make massive progress over the coming years to end homelessness in Great Britain.

“Our values, the strength of our team, the quality of our front-line services and our reputation and influence all stand us in good stead for continuing our work to end homelessness. Whoever takes over from me is inheriting the leadership of a quite amazing organisation.”

He added: “I am delighted to be returning to UNICEF UK to take up the role of Chief Executive. It is an immense privilege to lead the organisation in its mission to deliver lifesaving work for children and promote and defend their rights both around the world and here in the UK.

“Right now, children are facing the devastating impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, the climate crisis and coming under attack in conflicts across the world, threatening their survival and ability to reach their full potential. The work of UNICEF UK to advocate for and create change for children has never been so vital.

“I am excited to get to work alongside and support such a talented group of colleagues help achieve UNICEF UK’s vision of a world fit for every child.”
