MP Rachel Maclean has been removed as housing minister, the fifteenth person to be ousted from the role since the Tories took power as part of a coalition in 2010.

The Redditch MP fell in prime minister Rishi Sunak’s cabinet reshuffle, which saw Suella Braverman sacked as home secretary after weeks of controversy. She was replaced with James Cleverly, who was formerly foreign secretary.

Maclean said it was a “privilege” to be housing secretary but that she was “disappointed” as she was “looking forward to introducing the Renters (Reform) Bill to committee tomorrow and later the Leasehold and Freehold Bill”.

A new housing minister has yet to be appointed.

As part of his reshuffle, Sunak has appointed former prime minister David Cameron as foreign secretary. Cameron stepped down as an MP in 2016 but qualifies for the role as he was recently made a life peer. However, as a member of the House of Lords he will not be accountable to MPs in the House of Commons, only to select committees.
