We do not know how many over 55’s experience mental illness or neurodiversity:

  • Dementia is mostly detected but sometimes this happens later than is helpful for the person or their family
  • Many older people have long term mental health problems, some develop mental illness because of their age, or isolation, economic inactivity, physical illness, bereavement, financial issues can all trigger poor mental health
  • Many men over 55 have minor Autism (previously called Asperger’s), or other forms of neurodiversity which were not easily understood and assessed before the 1990’s.

This session will explore older people’s mental illness, neurodiversity and dementia. It will explore these conditions, the tips to work with these conditions, and how to try and get help from social services or mental health services.
