    The line-up for this year’s Housing Quality Network annual conference is taking shape with a host of top names being added to the line-up.

    Focusing on the three Rs dominating much of the social housing conversation in 2023: regulation, reputation and repairs, the conference takes place over two days – one virtual on Tuesday 11 July and one face-to-face in London on Thursday 13 July (The View, London).

    With the sector currently facing a perfect storm of challenges including increased scrutiny from government, national media and social media, we will shine a light on practical solutions, positive case studies and the key elements required to repair our reputation with residents, stakeholders and the wider community.

    Alistair McIntosh, Chief Executive, HQN

    Alistair McIntosh is one of the social housing sector’s most respected and best known personalities.

    As founder and Chief Executive of HQN, he is regarded as one of the foremost advisers on governance and regulation, specialising in VfM and stress testing. His hands-on approach sees Alistair leading on all HQN’s in-depth assessment mock exercises and support work, designing and running the popular Iron Grip sessions and chairing/speaking at conferences and events.

    Career highlights include setting up and running the National Federation of ALMOs, leading the popular consultation on the regulatory standards for housing, and developing an approach to VfM that won praise from the housing minister.

    A regular contributor to the housing press, Alistair’s columns are known for their humorous, pointed and painfully accurate assessment of the state of social housing.

    Jill Haley, Vice President, Chartered Institute of Housing

    Jill is an accomplished chief executive and housing professional with extensive leadership skills, knowledge and experience. She is a fellow member of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) and a Chartered Management Institute level 5 qualified coach and mentor.

    Having spent the majority of her 42-year career in social housing, working with diverse and disadvantaged communities, her experience has included a path of continuous learning and personal development, across housing association, local authority, and the private sector.

    Throughout her career, Jill’s enthusiasm for excellence in leadership has inspired her to develop further and to develop others. Her work on leading and empowering staff and communities has attracted both regional and national recognition, including various personal and organisational awards. The story surrounding the success of her transformational leadership approach while chief executive in Byker, Newcastle, has been included as a chapter in a book titled ‘Hope Under Neoliberal Austerity’ published in April 2021.

    Jill is Vice President of the CIH, the independent professional standards body of the housing sector and is ordained to become president in 2023. She is a non-executive director of a large mental health NHS foundation trust in the North of England, where she also chairs the People, Culture and Diversity Committee.

    Jo Causon, Chief Executive, Institute of Customer

    Jo joined The Institute as CEO in 2009. Over the last 10 years she has driven membership growth by 150 percent and established the UK Customer Satisfaction Index as the country’s barometer of consumer satisfaction, providing organisations with an indicator of the return on
    their service strategy investment. Jo brings a wealth of experience from the commercial sector, enabling her to put customer service at the heart of the Boardroom agenda. She has extensive experience in the financial services sector having served as a non-executive director to Aegon UK’s independent governance committee and having spent more than 11 years with organisations such as Aviva.She has also held director roles in brand and business consulting, policy development and research for the likes of City & Guilds and the Chartered Management Institute. Jo focuses on demonstrating the clear link between employee engagement, customer service strategies and organisational performance. Working across the public, private and voluntary sectors she provides strategic advice to Boardrooms to raise the standards of service provided by UK organisations, providing evidence of the connection between customer satisfaction and operational efficiency and profitability. She works with parliamentarians, officials and regulators to help them understand and harness the impact that service has on the UK economy and productivity. She is a regular media commentator and was called to give evidence at the Public Administration Select Committee inquiry into complaints handling.

    Richard Blakeway, Housing Ombudsman, Housing Ombudsman Service

    Richard was appointed as Housing Ombudsman from 1 September 2019. He has extensive experience in the housing sector, with previous roles including Deputy Mayor of London for Housing, chair of the Homes for London board and non-executive director of Homes England. During his eight years at the Greater London Authority, Richard was responsible for a major investment programme, overseeing the delivery of 100,000 affordable homes and regeneration plans for 670 hectares of land owned by the authority. Richard led the creation of the first team at City Hall to address rough sleeping, commissioning around £10 million of services each year, as well as the first Social Impact Bond on homelessness.

    Amanda Coleman, former Head of Corporate Communications, Greater Manchester Police and reputation management expert

    Amanda is a crisis communication specialist and the director and founder of crisis communication consultancy Amanda Coleman Communication Ltd. Based in the UK, she has more than 20 years’ experience in emergency services communication and leading at a time of crisis.

    She is the author of Crisis Communication Strategies published in May 2020 by Kogan Page.  A second edition of the popular book will be published in March 2023. Her second book Everyday Communication Strategies was published in November 2022. In 2017, Amanda led the law enforcement communication response to the Manchester Arena terrorist attack. Now, Amanda provides consultancy support to public and private sector organisations facing challenging times, as well as training individuals and teams to more effectively communicate in a crisis.

    Amanda began her working life as a journalist. She is a Chartered PR practitioner as well as a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and the Public Relations and Communication Association. She is an advisor for the Resilience Advisors Network, a senior associate of the Centre for Crisis and Risk Communication and the Chair of the UK’s Emergency Planning Society Communication Professional Working Group.

    Charlotte Hilliard, Policy Lead – Professionalisation and Anti-Social Behaviour, DLUHC

    Charlotte currently leads on professionalisation and anti-social behaviour policy within the Social Housing Quality and Residents division in DLUHC. This includes leading on stakeholder engagement and policy development around the implementation of the Competence and Conduct Standards. She has previously worked on other aspects of housing policy, including building safety and the Grenfell Inquiry. She also has a background working for a housing association.

    Andy Merrin, Innovation & Decarbonisation Director, United Living Property Services Ltd

    Andy is a Chartered Environmentalist and has worked in the domestic and commercial property sectors for over 20 years focusing on the energy performance of buildings and implementing strategies to decarbonise homes and offices. Prior to this Andy worked in the rail and aviation sectors in the UK and Middle East overseeing environmental mitigation programmes on major infrastructure projects such as High Speed 1 and New Doha International Airport. Having worked with Bechtel, Arup, ENGIE and now United Living Andy has a wealth of knowledge across a wide range of energy, low carbon and environmental related topics. Andy currently leads on the delivery of low carbon housing retrofit strategies for United Living Property Services.

    Angela Holden, Assistant Director, Consumer Regulation, Regulator of Social Housing

    Angela Holden is the Assistant Director of Consumer Regulation at the Regulator of Social Housing. She is responsible for managing the Regulator’s current reactive consumer regulation function and supporting in the implementation of the Social Housing White Paper.

     

    Patrick Vernon OBE, social commentator, Windrush campaigner and cultural historian

    Patrick is a social commentator and cultural historian, who works in the voluntary and public sector. His career has been involved with developing and managing health and social care services, including mental health, public health, regeneration and employment projects. Also a film maker and amateur cultural historian, he runs his own social enterprise promoting the history of diverse communities, as founder of Every Generation and the “100 Great Black Britons” campaign. He is also an expert on African and Caribbean genealogy in the UK. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2012 Birthday Honours for “services to the Reduction of Health Inequalities for Ethnic Minorities”, and in 2018 was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Wolverhampton.

    In 2018, Patrick led a successful campaign for 22 June to be recognised annually as Windrush Day, a national day acknowledging the migrant contribution to UK society.

    Doug Sarney, Director, MRI

    Doug plays an integral role in the introduction of new products and services to the social housing sector, working closely with industry thought-leaders and housing providers. He has many years of experience analysing large data sets and developing strategic, mathematical modelling solutions, the last nineteen of which have been in social housing. Currently he is heading up two new initiatives for MRI: The Data Revolution and The Resident Voice Index TM.

    Hannah Fearn, former Inside Housing, Guardian and Independent journalist

    Hannah Fearn is a reporter, writer and columnist covering politics, social affairs and a wide range of other issues. She is the former comment editor of the Independent, and previously worked for The Guardian, Times Higher Education and Inside Housing.

    Tom Leon-Grimes, Customer Resilience Lead, Orbit Group

    Tom has held a successful and enjoyable career in housing for over 10 years, starting as an Apprentice Housing Assistant, aged 16. Tom has developed a vast understanding of housing through roles in front-line housing, data analysis, business improvement, project management and service development. Last year, Tom was awarded as the winner of the Housing’s Next Generation Competition 2022, run by the Housing Quality Network.

    Tom’s current role is with Orbit Housing, head-quartered in Coventry, with over 45,000 homes. As their Interim Customer Resilience Lead, Tom is seconded to an urgent taskforce focussing on improving damp, mould and condensation issues. Tom leads a blended customer service team, overseeing the coordination, communication, complaints, referrals, data and process functions.

    Making a positive difference to customers’ lives, and providing much needed quality housing, is Tom’s reason for enjoying working in social housing and Tom is looking forward to identifying and recognising more Next Generation talent, through this year’s competition.
