Middle and senior managers legal knowledge is often dated, maybe based on sector myths or they too quickly ask their chosen retained lawyers. Case law is replete with examples of where this approach is found expensively wanting.

    • Social Housing (Regulation) Act 2023
    • Housing Ombudsman and maladminstration
    • Allocation changes, reciprocals, management transfer
    • Immigration law, eligibility, right to rent and brexit
    • Domestic Abuse Act 2021, Care Act 2014, capacity and hoarding
    • Case law – succession, assignments, suspected abandonment, sole to joint and vice versa
    • Huma Rights Act 1998, Equality Act 2010 proportionality and case law
    • Fraud, sub-letting, water rates
    • Damp and mould, housing conditions, fire safety
    • ASB case law.

  • Our trainer

Mel Cant trained as a Barrister and came to the Bar in 2000. She doesn’t practice independently, choosing to work in the Social Housing Sector which she has done now for over 25 years.

She covers all aspects of social housing law from housing advice, homelessness, allocations, lettings, tenancy and leasehold management, antisocial behaviour, asset management and disrepair.

She undertakes homelessness reviews for nine local authorities and also undertakes training and consultancy providing practical solutions to legal issues within the sector.

Her favourite feedback ever is “Everyone needs a Mel on speed dial!”
