As a social landlord, you are responsible not only for the health and safety of the buildings you manage but also the staff who work for you. We know the pressures on all housing staff are rising, with growing workloads and more tenants with vulnerabilities to support, often in the absence of other services. Repairs and maintenance staff also face dangers inherent in the types of work they carry out.

A failure to protect staff or contractors can result in hefty fines or even prison time, but it can also affect staff morale, sickness levels and general wellbeing. It is important to get it right.

This event focused on how you can best care for the health, safety and welfare of all your employees: office-based or working from home, from housing officers out and about on your estates to repairs and maintenance staff driving long distances to jobs and working in unfamiliar places. We also looked at the specific requirements and good practice surrounding those who work on their own.

    What we cover:

    • Your responsibilities for the health, safety and wellbeing of your employees
    • Managing the risks associated with repairs and maintenance or development work
    • New issues emerging from working from home
    • Lessons learned from a recent HSE prosecution in the social housing sector
    • Best practice in supporting front-line employees to reduce stress and mental health issues
    • How to protect lone workers and make the best use of technology.

What you will get from the recording:

    • An update on your legal and regulatory requirements regarding health and safety in the workplace
    • Hear from others on how they protect their workers from stress and illness
    • Understand what types of safety issues you need to be aware of in the social housing business
    • Hear directly from an organisation fined for not protecting their repairs and maintenance staff.
