It is imperative that housing association board members, local authority councillors and senior executives understand their existing, new and forthcoming health and safety responsibilities.

Boards and councillors should be challenging management teams now about the quality and safety of the homes they provide.

They must also ensure that they adequately understand all legislative requirements relating to health and safety compliance, including their duties and responsibilities with regard to fire and building safety under the new regulatory regime under the Building Safety Act 2022, and the safety duties being introduced in the Social Housing (Regulation) Act.
