March 11th marked the 100th night since a Glasgow-based charity opened its doors for this season’s Overnight Welcome Centre (OWC).

Glasgow City Mission have been opening their doors for those less fortunate for almost 200 years. Their OWC is an overnight shelter for those who would be sleeping rough, with trained staff available to provide support during the night and in the morning. Their first OWC was opened in 2010, and they have been accessible yearly ever since.

Since opening its doors on December 1st, this season’s OWC has prevented 422 from sleeping rough, with a positive outcome rate of 95%. According to their own data, 64 people who have used the service were helped to return home after previously being stranded, while 37 were able to source accommodation with friends or family.

Jack Geddes, marketing and fundraising manager, Glasgow City Mission said: “Hosting the Centre in our main Crimea Street building for the first time has allowed us to access an array of accommodation solutions in the city and has not restricted us to one venue. This has ensured our guests get help at their point of crisis before our day team start advocating for them the next morning.”

This season’s OWC will be open until March 31st, while daytime support will be available until the end of the year.
