Topic: Tackling hoarding – Hoarding is a significant issue. We know that as well as creating a safety risk, hoarding behaviour is very often caused by an underlying mental health issue. Join us to discuss the challenges and to hear about best practice in the sector.

The Housing Management Network is pleased to announce its latest best practice group on tackling hoarding. Research shows that 2-5% of people in the UK hoard to significant levels. Not all of them suffer from a hoarding disorder, but the majority of people have an underlying mental health issue of some kind that causes this behaviour.

Hoarding is a hazard. The accumulation of clutter can cause injury, creates a fire risk, and makes it more difficult to clean the home which can encourage pest infestations.

People who are hoarding will often be reluctant to let anyone into their home so this can make it difficult for frontline staff to do repairs to the property or essential safety checks. We all know hoarding is a safety problem, but clearing a property of clutter doesn’t get to the root of the problem. Many landlords are now taking a more person-centred approach and are working with the tenant to understand why they hoard and help address the issue in the longer-term.

This session will be facilitated by Bobbie Hough and take place via zoom and we encourage all attendees to share their experiences and issues with this topic and come with questions and challenges they would like to discuss.

Best practice groups are free to members and are a fantastic opportunity to hear about what’s happening in the sector and network with fellow housing professionals.

Why you should come to the best practice group:

    • Great way to find out what others are doing
    • Good, honest and open discussions
    • Sharing best practice and ideas with others in similar roles
    • Acts as a sense-check about what people are doing or thinking of doing.
