Safeguarding means protecting a citizen’s health, wellbeing and human rights; enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect. Safeguarding children, young people and adults is a collective responsibility for both individuals and organisations. Housing staff have a key safeguarding role to play, alongside their colleagues in social care, health and the police, in keeping people safe.

The sector has made considerable progress in mainstreaming safeguarding over the last decade. It is now no longer regarded as purely an issue for care and support staff. Furthermore, providers are now frequently ensuring that their contractors and sub-contractors are clear about their safeguarding responsibilities. But there is still plenty to do and many new challenges particularly post Covid. The stresses associated with the cost-of-living crisis and backlogs in repairs coupled with staff shortages means that customer facing staff are having to deal with increasingly challenging situations, often in a lone working situation and with little support from other agencies.

Delegates will build on their existing safeguarding knowledge and develop their skills in order to support staff or play a lead role in safeguarding.

    Delegates will:

    • Understand in detail what is and is not an appropriate safeguarding referral, exploring topics such as eligibility, mental illness, suicide, hoarding and neglect
    • Learn how to effectively triage safeguarding alerts from front line staff in order to ensure referrals are appropriate
    • Explore mental capacity and consent for over 16s to identify whether you are dealing with a safeguarding adult or children alert
    • Look at more complex topics such as trafficking, grooming, when two adults ‘in need’ abuse each other, choosing MARAC or Safeguarding
    • Look at trauma and safeguarding from a ‘trauma informed’, ‘psychologically informed’ perspective.

This will be an interactive session with plenty of time for questions. Delegates are encouraged to bring along example cases which they would like to discuss/consider.
