It is imperative that housing association board members, local authority councillors and senior executives understand their existing, new and forthcoming health and safety responsibilities.

Boards and councillors should be challenging management teams now about the quality and safety of the homes they provide.

    This session provides an overview of the statutory, legal and regulatory requirements under the new building safety regime and the new regulatory framework for social housing.  It will focus on the key areas that board members and executive directors will be accountable for. It will equip board members to drive a building safety culture across the whole organisation.

    The course will cover:

    • Regulatory expectations on health and safety
    • The role of the board in managing risk
    • Creating a safety culture
    • Scrutinising compliance
    • Overview of the Building Safety Act
    • The new building safety regime

    Debbie Larner has worked in the social housing sector for over 30 years within both local authorities and housing associations before moving on to join the professional body – the CIH – where she was Head of Practice. In that time, she developed expertise in in a number of areas including housing and asset management, resident engagement, governance, health and safety.

    She developed the CIH professional standards and also co-led research into the future of social housing, stigma and stereotyping in housing and the role of the housing professional.
