Jenrick to seek 'urgent answers' from council after shocking housing images emerge

Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick has vowed to take action after shocking footage was aired, showing the desperate disrepair some council properties were in.

Shown on ITV News last night, the images were met with disgust from many within the sector, with issues such as leaks and chronic damp featuring.

The film followed a young mother and her two sons, who at one point walked across a floor so full of water the flooring was sodden underfoot.

In response, Croydon Council said: "We are sorry that these residents have not had the level of care for their homes that they rightly expect and we will be looking into what has happened as a matter of urgency."

The Housing Secretary took to Twitter to say: "People living in social housing must be treated with dignity and respect. And their complaints handled effectively. That’s the heart of our recent Charter on Social Housing. I’m appalled by what has occurred in Croydon and will be seeking urgent answers from Croydon Council."

Others used the video to highlight similar problems with other social landlords.
