Tackling racial inequality – the business, social and moral argument for change (a roundtable discussion)
Details
2020 highlighted the need for advancing equality, diversity, and inclusion in our organisations. It was dominated by a virus which was originally described as ‘indiscriminate’, but in fact served to throw into sharp relief existing inequalities in society. The virus did discriminate by taking more lives from BAME communities as well as highlighting the social divide which in some cases went largely unnoticed. Then after the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter Movement, racial injustice has been very prominent in all our thoughts, and for those of us who are white, how we can be better allies. This is not just about racial equality it is about equality for everyone in our society.
This roundtable discussion, hosted by Marilyn Bryan-Jones and Colin Heyman, will look at what people and organisations can do to address these issues.
It will cover:
- Historical context of people of colour in the UK
- Experiences of people of colour in housing
- What white people can do as allies
- What organisations can do, and the use of a systematic, organisation-wide approach to embed improved equality, diversity, and inclusion practice.
There will be opportunities for people to ask questions and time in small groups for participants to consider what they have heard, and plan what they can do in their own organisations.
*Please note that places are limited to two per organisation. Further bookings will be put on a waiting list for places.
This session is free to members of all HQN networks. To check your entitlement email networks@hqnetwork.co.uk or call 01904 557150 (option 3). To join the waiting list for places email networks@hqnetwork.co.uk.

Positive Footprints – how housing associations can raise the aspirations of primary school children
Details
The role of housing associations as anchor institutions has never been more important. They are uniquely placed to deliver inclusive and social solutions to support communities most at risk from the pending recession and rising levels of unemployment.
Both short and long-term approaches are required to address widening inequalities and create opportunities where communities can thrive.
This interactive session will highlight how in partnership with Positive Footprints, housing associations across the country are changing the story for nearly 14,000 children and young people this year through an award-winning programme that raises aspirations, opens up the world of work and builds resilience from an early age.
More information on Positive Footprints can be found here.

Estate Services Club
Details
The Estate Services Club is pleased to announce its first meeting of 2021. These groups give attendees the chance to network and share best practice around a given theme.

10:00-11:00 – Experts Emma Towler and Jackie Dicken will take you through a standard model of service charging, what a change programme on this looks like and how you can influence your chief executive to make it happen.
