  1. Mobilising the three Cs: Clients, Contractors and Communities (in association with Can Do Toolkits)

    Details

'Carbon neutral housing and green jobs for people unemployed by pandemic are crucial to reset the economy and #BuildBackBetter Sophie Howe, Future Generations Commissioner

There is no going back to a pre-crisis world. With the complexity of the challenges we face we need a Can Do spirit more than ever. That will mean building on the radical approach, pioneered by the housing sector to make every pound of public investment work for local people and their communities.  We want your help in making this happen.

In July last year one hundred people came together to celebrate ten years of the Can Do Toolkits at an event in Techniquest, Cardiff Bay. As a result, we determined to reshape the Can Do approach in the context of huge challenges for wellbeing and the economy. The current crisis makes this much more urgent.

You are invited to take part in a series of two interactive, virtual seminars and help us redefine value and maximise long term community benefits from public investment. We will be focussing on

    • How the foundational economy just became so much more important
    • The huge opportunity to make Wales the first post crisis green economy, building on the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act and starting with building thousands of low carbon affordable homes and decarbonising exiting houses and buildings
    • Redefining what value is and engineering a Can Do approach into public investment across health, social care, housing and infrastructure programmes.

In this session we will co-produce a new definition of value that puts more weight on long term benefits including making Wales a pioneer of the Green Economy. We will set this within the context of the Foundational Economy and embrace the principles and practices of the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act.

    Details

The Leadership and Organisational Development Hub is pleased to announce the next best practice group. These regional events provide attendees with the chance to network and share best practice while discussing a topical issue.

What is the Leadership and Organisational Development Hub?

The hub is a new networking group set up for Housing Quality Network members who work in or have an interest in organisation development. The hub is a learning community where Organisational Development (OD) experts from across the sector collaborate to share ideas and best practice around all things to do with organisational effectiveness and transformation.

If you’re an OD professional working in or around the housing sector, the hub will help you build your external network, find out what’s worked for others, discuss your own experiences and develop professionally.

The second hub meeting of 2020 will focus on Management Development Programmes, and we're pleased to be able to welcome Cobalt Housing to tell us about their programme.

  6. Anti-social behaviour – enforcement and COVID-19

    Details

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact on our lives and working practices, the need for intervention can be difficult to balance with ensuring the safety of staff and tenants.

There has been a spike in ASB complaints and disputes, resulting from people being at home more, increased noise and parties, and a decrease in tolerance levels.

Landlords are finding that enforcement in general is a concern due to COVID, and that changing tact may be necessary.

In this free* Best Practice Group, Claire Hogan-Clark from Capsticks will offer her take on types of ASB processes and enforcement. You will also have the opportunity to ask Claire questions and find out more about techniques that other landlords are using.

  7. Mental health on the front line – a guide to looking after your own wellbeing

    Details

As the COVID-19 crisis grips the country, frontline housing staff have had a significant part to play in keeping the country – and especially those who are the most vulnerable – safe.

Housing officers have had to adapt their roles almost on a daily basis to make sure they are working to the latest government guidance, and have become pillars in their communities at a time where people are frightened and confused.

But in this fast changing world, it is vital that frontline workers take the time to look after their own mental wellbeing.

In this free Best Practice Group, Ant Dowell from mental health charity Imagine Independence will offer his take on how housing officers and other frontline housing workers can look after their own mental health and make sure they are in the best possible position to care for others at a time of national trauma.

    Details

Now more than ever, the pandemic has emphasised the vital work that carers do. Harry’s Pledge, which was launched during National Carers Week in June, calls on social landlords to make a commitment to carers in recognition of the great work that they do.

Julie Doyle, Chief Executive at Longhurst Group will be introducing Harry’s Pledge and explaining why it is so important to her both on a personal and professional level. We will discuss the four main components of the pledge and how your organisation can get involved.

  11. Do the smart thing – the practical application of the HACT white paper (in association with SmartRent)

    Details

The recent HACT white paper ‘Do the smart thing’ examines some of the pilots that social housing organisations have run over the past five years to test the value of smart technology.

It reviews some of the wider barriers to implementation, as well as highlights some of the benefits of smart technology for both residents and social housing organisations.

At this free virtual workshop, HACT’s Chief Innovation Officer Dr Rob Wray will discuss the practical application of smart technology providing advice and guidance to those getting started or stuck in delivering a smart home strategy.

Rob explains: “Successful implementation of smart technology will require a shift in culture, away from ‘what can this technology do for us?’ to ‘how can this technology work best for residents?’.

“With the sector committed to a data-driven future, one in which residents are engaged and empowered, investment in smart homes should be seen as a critical step towards achieving this.”
