This half-day workshop will provide an insight into the world of blindness and partial sight.

Delegates will have an opportunity to participate in activities, and experience simulations to understand both barriers and solutions for residents who are blind or partially sighted, focusing on accessing information, resident involvement and community understanding.

    By the end of this course you will:

    • Understand the barriers faced by residents who are blind or partially sighted
    • Be aware of good practice when blind or partially sighted residents want to access information
    • Know the key issues when blind or partially sighted residents want to become involved
    • Have insight into community understanding
    • Have confidence approaching, guiding and describing the environment to a blind person if required
    • Know the extent of the UK population affected by sight loss.
    What the course will cover:
    • Statistics, terminology and definitions
    • Looking at the variety of ways people might see
    • ‘In my shoes’ – thought-provoking personal experiences of blindness which includes tips for daily living
    • Guiding – what to do, and possible pitfalls
    • Describing the environment – we can all do it!
    • Identifying barriers and solutions to improve resident access/inclusion: – Accessing information – Resident involvement – Community understanding.

  • Our trainer

    Graham Helm combines an abundance of energy, wit and enthusiasm to bring his training workshops to life. His background is originally in youth work with local authorities. After fully losing his sight in his 30s, he retrained to become a tutor and now delivers a range of training programmes including visual awareness training. He has extensive experience in the housing sector, successfully training staff, managers and tenant groups. Graham is an engaging individual with the ability to convey serious messages in a way that will make you remember them for a long time to come.
