The introduction of the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017 and the ever evolving revised Homelessness Code of Guidance 2018 brought in a new way of dealing with homelessness through greater emphasis on prevention and relief to homelessness rather than the historic emergency reactionary approach.

This course takes you through the new approach including the enhanced timeframes for preventing and relieving homelessness, including the use of Personalised Housing Plans.  It looks at how well these new elements have been embedded within the homelessness process, looking in detail at the thoughts of the Housing Ombudsman from the complaints they have dealt and the case law around this.

We also go through the key elements of the homelessness decision, namely whether someone is homeless, eligible, priority need, intentional and whether they have a local connection and consider recent case law around how this is being dealt within practice.

Finally, with so many opportunities now to review decisions that are made, we look at what needs to be considered when making decisions and how these need to be set out within decision letters.

    Who should attend?

This course is for anyone working with homeless households from caseworkers to support workers, whether experienced or not.  The course gives those currently working in the sector an update on current guidance and case law and for those new to the sector a good understanding of what needs to be considered.
