What the Social Housing White Paper means for local authorities
- Type HQN Event (Virtual)
- Venue Virtual workshop
- Start 09 Feb 2021 10:00
- End 09 Feb 2021 12:00
The White Paper promises the biggest shake-up to local authority housing for years so what should you be doing now to prepare?
A return to proactive consumer regulation, a robust inspection regime and new tenant satisfaction measures are just some of the major changes on the horizon for local authorities as part of the recent Social Housing White Paper.
The government’s determination to treat all social housing residents in the same way, regardless of who their landlord is, has far-reaching implications for councils – not least from a resource and capacity issue.
Although legislation is required to bring about the regulatory changes, both the Ministry of Housing and Local Government and the Regulator of Social Housing have promised to ‘move at pace’ where they can. It is therefore essential that local authorities get ahead of the game and start preparing as best they can.
At this virtual workshop, HQN associates Roger Jarman and Emma Lindley will set out the key changes proposed in the White Paper, highlight the implications for local authorities, ALMOs and TMOs and provide practical advice on the steps that can be taken now.
This session will also look at a range of other proposals that have major implications for local authorities, including a new framework of ‘Green Infrastructure Standards’; a requirement for housing associations and councils to work together on allocations and new measures to support tenants with mental health and/or facing anti-social behaviour issues.
- Roger Jarman, former Head of Housing at the Audit Commission
- Emma Lindley, Housing Strategy Lead Officer, Ashfield District Council
