    Leading change

    Leading change

New from the Leadership Trust for 2019

The world of social housing is changing. Whether it's new technology, new ways of working or full-blown merger, no-one is standing still.

But your people will learn to lead change only when they are empowered to do it themselves.

Many organisations recognise that to drive change they need a new style of leadership; one that can shift their culture, seize opportunities and reinvent the business.

Research demonstrates that most businesses believe in the need for better leadership and that experiential development is the most powerful way to deliver it.

That’s why HQN has partnered with the Leadership Trust. Their Special Forces heritage means leading change during complex and uncertain times is in their DNA.

The Trust's team of experts help people develop the skills, knowledge and resilience that will enable them to lead change confidently through engaging and energising their colleagues.

Taking place over one day, this new workshop has been specifically designed for established housing leaders who are responsible for leading change; be it as an experienced manager of an organisation, function, business unit or team.

Delegates will learn to positively and intelligently adapt their own leadership behaviours, and to drive the behaviours and culture within their own organisations to respond to the fast changing and complex external context.

The workshop is a chance to:

    • Explore the core principles of effectively engaging and energising others
    • Identify the skills and knowledge required to lead change more confidently
    • Apply this learning to your own change projects or challenges in order to make some immediate impact back at work.

This event is also being held in London.

The Homelessness Reduction Act – one year on

    Details

The Homelessness Reduction Act – one year on

As politicians, charities and housing bodies continue to sound the alarm over rising levels of homelessness, there is cross-party agreement that radical action is required. But is the Homelessness Reduction Act the answer?

Hailed by campaigners as a landmark piece of legislation that will transform the way local authorities approach homeless applications, the Act aims to ensure no-one is turned away when they ask their council for help.

But one year on, have things started to improve and are we finally on the road to long-term homelessness prevention?

This major one-day conference, in association with Homeless Link, will look at the day-to-day reality of implementing the Act, the barriers to success and  the challenges that remain. And it will attempt to answer the question, what has actually changed?

You will hear from the Government, leading homelessness charities and local authorities working to implement the Act on a daily basis.

There is no doubt the Government is focused on reducing homelessness, rough sleeping, and the numbers of households in temporary accommodation. But does the Act do enough to tackle the root causes and is the social housing sector itself doing enough to prevent homelessness through a sustainable co-ordinated response?

With the new Act now in force for nearly a year, this conference will look at the national policy agenda, update on current homelessness  issues and trends and hear about solutions which can be implemented across the country.

    Key themes:

    • The Homelessness Reduction Act one year on - what has changed?
    • Government policy and future direction for homelessness and rough sleeping
    • The scale of the problem, barriers to success and how to overcome them, trends, and solutions
    • Issues associated with homeless households being housed outside of London
    • What works?  Innovation and good practice in preventing homelessness
    • Response from the housing association sector including the Commitment to Refer

    Confirmed speakers:

    • Matt Harrison, Director of Business and Enterprise for Homeless Link
    • Jo Beck, Homelessness Advice and Support Team Manager, Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government
    • Chris Hancock, Head of Policy, Crisis
    • Sarah-Jane Gay, External Affairs Manager, London and South East, National Housing Federation
    • Nick Porter, Senior Advisor – Housing, Local Government Association
    • Elly Shepherd, Head of Housing and Planning Policy, London Councils
    • Helen Brown, Cambridgeshire Homelessness Trailblazer Project
    • Darren Alexander, Head of Housing Needs, Customer and Commercial, Luton Borough Council

    Who should attend?

    This event is essential for:

    • All professionals involved in preventing homelessness, including front line triage, homeless prevention staff, housing options officers and service managers
    • Those responsible for homelessness reviews and strategies
    • Housing association and voluntary sector employees with an active or future role in homelessness prevention.

That’s why we’ve designed a new toolkit and series of workshops for 2019 to help you through the maze of obligations and best practice – to help you avoid the pitfalls and reap the benefits of good governance.

    • Beyond the boardroom – what should happen between meetings?
    • Supporting governance – what’s the role of the company secretary
    • What does the regulator expect, and how might it change in the future?

The sessions will be presented by Peter Walters, former housing association chief executive, chair and non-executive director of housing organisations, an expert on governance and working with Boards, and author of HQN’s new Governance Toolkit, which will be made available to delegates as part of these workshops.

The art of leadership - harnessing personal power (two-day residential)

    Details

    The art of leadership

“Leadership bestows on us an awesome power. We can use it to over-power, de-power or out-power others and in doing so we will break them. Alternatively we can use this power to enable, empower and grow people, winning their hearts and minds.” David Gilbert-Smith, former SAS Officer and Founder of the Leadership Trust

Building new affordable homes, maintaining existing stock and a relentless focus on health and safety are just a few of the many challenges facing our sector. Add to this a constantly changing operating environment and the inevitable need to do more with less and things are tough.

So inspiring the best performance from your people is critical.

That’s why we’ve partnered with Leadership Trust as their special forces heritage means dealing with tough situations is in their DNA.

The Leadership Trust has four decades' worth of experience working with some of the UK's top blue-chip companies.

Their team of experts help people to find their own leadership style, enabling people to perform under pressure and deliver results.

Taking place over two full days this residential course has been specifically designed for established housing leaders and those with the potential to become one. The course is a chance to:

    • Build your personal leadership style, raising awareness of what can hinder your performance
    • Establish an understanding of how your leadership style can support or hinder the performance of your team
    • Connect your leadership style with challenges at work so that you can practise being at your best under pressure.

The residential programme includes a series of workshops and practical challenges designed to help develop key leadership skills and your own personal leadership style.

    Key sessions include:

    • The art of leadership within the housing sector
    • Performance under pressure
    • Ethos and culture
    • Adopting positive leadership behaviours.

PLEASE NOTE: The price of this residential course includes accommodation, a three-course dinner on the first evening, and all other meals/refreshments.
