Risky business – how do we fund supported housing?

Supported housing is increasingly high-risk business for housing providers. This half-day workshop will provide valuable insight on how landlords can balance their desire to deliver more housing for society’s most vulnerable people, with funding, regulatory and reputational risks.

Supported housing providers have faced years of financial uncertainty, which has stalled development programmes. Government has now confirmed that supported housing will continue to be funded through housing benefit, but providers are still dealing with care services stretched to breaking point. As demand for homes rises and care contracts are cut back, how can landlords continue to meet need without compromising on services? And will the recent Panorama exposé in County Durham lead to providers reviewing their own approaches?

A review of housing-related support has now been commissioned by government and is underway. The sector must make its voice heard on the links between housing and care.

An influx of private investment in supported housing has the potential to transform the market. However, following the near collapse of First Priority Housing Association last year the Regulator of Social Housing is watching closely, and has raised concerns around the lease-based letting model that is driving rapid expansion for some landlords.

So how do we get the balance right and deliver the homes we need?

This half-day workshop will cover:

  • Managing risk
  • Can the private sector deliver for supported housing? And will this be a long-term commitment?
  • Funding Housing-related support – making our case to government
  • Learnings from the LHA Cap – how can we evidence the impact we make?
  • Reputation management.

This event is also being held in Manchester.
