Mental health and wellbeing in the workplace

Mental health issues have a significant impact on employee wellbeing and are a major cause of long-term absence from work. It is widely reported that mental ill health will affect 1 in 4 people at some point in their working lives.

Come and join us for this thought provoking and topical day packed full of useful insights, information, and a case study from the social housing sector to help you understand how your organisation can promote good mental health and provide support for those who may be experiencing issues.

Our Keynote Speaker is Lord Dennis Stevenson co-author of ‘Thriving at Work’ and a long time campaigner for greater understanding and treatment of mental illness. He was the Founding Chair of MQ: Transforming Mental Health, a charity which supports research into mental health; and he promoted a Private Members’ Bill – the “Mental Health (Discrimination) Bill” – the first key step in the UK to removing a number of the key discriminations against people who suffer from mental illness.

Martin Coyd, OBE is a leading health and safety professional in the UK construction industry and is Head of Health, Safety & Wellbeing at Mace Construction. Martin has a wealth of experience in health and safety with a passion for wellbeing, and has a leading role in the UK’s Building Mental Health Framework.

Representatives from ACAS will be in attendance to talk about their ‘framework for positive mental health at work’. Developed for employers, employees and line managers, the framework asks what we can do to improve and maintain our own mental health.

It’s also a pleasure to reveal that comedian and writer Jake Mills will be joining us. Having battled depression in 2013, Jake attempted to take his own life - thankfully he was discovered before it was too late and made a full recovery.

Jake opened up on social media about his secret battles and his story went viral; as a result, he became inundated with messages from people asking for help. It quickly became clear that the fear of being judged was preventing many from seeking help. Determined to change things, Jake created ‘Chasing the Stigma’ with the aim of removing unnecessary stigmas attached to mental illness.

We will also be joined by our colleagues in the sector who will share information with regards to the wellbeing strategies and mental health initiatives within their own organisations.
