Housing's mental health crisis

Housing associations are increasingly taking on responsibilities to provide support for the most vulnerable people in society.

A decade of austerity has eradicated local authority budgets – many services have had to be cut back or abandoned completely.

This has led to some major changes in the role of front-line housing professionals, who are now finding themselves as the lead professional in increasingly complex cases.

The health and wellbeing of tenants is a priority. Research by the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute shows that one in three people who live in social housing has a mental health problem. 

Mental health charity Mind has done research into the relationship between housing and mental health. They found that people with mental health problems experienced stigma from housing officials during the social housing application process, and from neighbours or flatmates. A large number had problems with benefits such as universal credit or housing benefits.

Despite little reference to mental health in the recent Green Paper, the Government does have an ambition to improve support for people with mental health problems.

But what do we need to do to make sure those working in social housing are well equipped to help tenants who need support with their mental health?

This one-day conference will give an overview of the current national policy landscape around mental health and housing.

It will also focus on some of the more regular front-line challenges officers face, such as hoarding and gambling.

Our best practice session will provide practical information and tips about how to support someone experiencing a mental health crisis.

Registration will start 30 minutes before the first session and refreshments will be available.

Cancellations and substitutions:

A full refund will be given if a cancellation is made 28 calendar days or more prior to the event, and a 50% refund if a cancellation is made 15-27 calendar days prior to the event. We regret that no refund can be given if a cancellation is made 14 calendar days or less before the event.
