Equality and Diversity Network Summit

Whatever the final outcome of Brexit, one thing is clear: we live in a divided country.

Different sections of society and demographic groups will have contrasting views on the state of the nation and their future roles within it. This has started to manifest itself in heightened political tensions, street protests and warnings of major civil unrest.

Underlining this is the steady rise in hate crime since the 2016 vote. People have felt able and justified in saying and doing things that a few years ago were deemed unacceptable.

Yet these acts often come out of marginalisation; from a society split between the haves and have-nots; between those for whom life is a struggle and those who have a pretty good life; between those who feel part of the future and those who feel ignored, put on the scrap heap, left behind. This doesn’t excuse such behaviour but does provide some context.

Working at the heart of some of the UK's most diverse and deprived communities, social landlords have a key role to play in helping to understand the underlying tensions and attempting to find ways to bring people together.

In this context, our first Equality and Diversity Network Summit couldn't be more timely. We will look at the implications of the post-Brexit landscape, particularly in terms of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion while addressing some of the wider issues.

The summit's key theme is the role of social landlords in bringing divided communities together: increasing understanding of difference, facilitating community cohesion, reaching marginalised people, minimising conflict.

Featuring a mix of keynote speakers, E&D experts and interactive workshops, the summit will take both a high level and practical look at the steps that can be taken to bridge the divide.

We are delighted to announce that our keynote speaker will be social justice activist Moyra Samuels, one of the principle campaigners and co-founders behind Justice4Grenfell.

Justice4Grenfell is a community-led organisation campaigning for change and a continued focus on the tragedy in the tower. They’re involved with direct action such as driving 'Three Billboards'-inspired ads around London, monthly silent marches from Town Hall to the tower, or demanding debate in parliament.

Joining Moyra will be:

  • Ali Akbor, Chief Executive, Unity Homes and Enterprise
  • Lisa Taylor, Executive Director, Future of London
  • Tony Hendricksen, Resilience Project Co-ordinator, and Nicky Nijjer, Resilience Youth Worker, Ethnic Minorities and Youth Support Wales
  • Colin Heyman, lead associate, HQN Equality and Diversity Network.
