This half-day training session provides an overview of the hazards and risks posed by asbestos containing materials (ACMs). It gives an overview of the legislative measures in place to permit employees to safeguard themselves and others affected by work activities.

    Learning objectives

    Delegates should be able to:

    • Have an increased awareness of the nature and properties of asbestos and its effects on health, including the increased risk of lung cancer for asbestos workers who smoke
    • Be familiar with the types, uses and likely occurrences of asbestos in buildings and where appropriate items of plant
    • Know how to avoid the risks from asbestos by understanding;
      • Where to obtain information on asbestos in premises prior to commencing work
      • What to do if suspicious materials are found
      • How to use appropriate workplace precautions, including the risk assessment process, or seek advice on workplace precautions, in respect of the risks of asbestos
    • Undertake work activities in a safe manner and without risk to themselves or others
    • Have an awareness of the key aspects of the asbestos regulations and how they fit into the broader context of health and safety legislation
    • Procedures to be followed when coming into unintentional contact with ACMs and an understanding of the appropriate emergency arrangements.

    Who should attend?

    The course is aimed at maintenance staff, housing staff, supervisors and caretakers. It is pitched at a ‘basic level’ so is ideal for all frontline staff. It can also be used as a refresher course for supervisors and maintenance staff to ensure their knowledge is current and up to date.

    Angela Burman (GradIOSH Dip CII SPdipEM AIEMA MIIRSM) has over 28 years in the Insurance Industry, with the last 18 years working for Gallagher in Risk Management Solutions, working with clients of all sizes and across all business sectors. She provides professional advice and guidance in the development and review of Risk Management Strategies, operational plans, policies and procedures. Angela is a highly effective and capable trainer, who provides interesting, interactive training courses, be it to members of the board or frontline staff. As an approved UKATA trainer, she regularly provides asbestos awareness training. Angela is a Graduate member of the Institute of Safety and Health and holds a Diploma in Insurance awarded by the Chartered Insurance Institute, as well as a specialist Diploma in Environmental Management. Her specialisms include the construction industry, with Angela holding a NEBOSH Construction Diploma.
