  1. Positive Footprints – how housing associations can raise the aspirations of primary school children

    Details

The role of housing associations as anchor institutions has never been more important. They are uniquely placed to deliver inclusive and social solutions to support communities most at risk from the pending recession and rising levels of unemployment.

Both short and long-term approaches are required to address widening inequalities and create opportunities where communities can thrive.

This interactive session will highlight how in partnership with Positive Footprints, housing associations across the country are changing the story for nearly 14,000 children and young people this year through an award-winning programme that raises aspirations, opens up the world of work and builds resilience from an early age.

More information on Positive Footprints can be found here.

  2. Managing void works to ease shortages and reduce cost (in association with Plentific)

    Details

On average, it takes housing providers 24 days to re-let a standard void - longer for those requiring major work. From acquiring keys from departing residents to sourcing the correct information from contractors, there is a complex process required to turnaround a void. However, doing so efficiently is key to reducing cost, pressure and increasing available housing stock.

In 2020, Plentific worked with change-makers in property and PropTech to understand the challenges housing providers face in regards to voids and how the process could be improved. In this virtual workshop, Gerry Doherty, Executive Director of Customer Services, Network Homes, Lee Ferendenus, Strategic Lead for Maintenance, ForViva and Emma Brooker, Head of Maintenance Services, East Region, L&Q, will join Cem Savas, CEO at Plentific to discuss the learnings from the process and how they envision voids management can be improved through digital solutions. The panel will provide their thoughts on:

    • Streamlined processes for faster voids turnarounds: how voids processes, from triggering to inspections can be restructured and automated in order to achieve faster turnarounds
    • Getting more value for money: how to connect the dots between inspection, managing work orders and delivering the quality needed, whilst keeping the costs down.
    • Providing transparency for better management: which progress and success metrics are most useful in tracking the performance of voids management?

    Who should attend?

    • Chief executives
    • Directors of operations/housing services/strategy
    • Digital teams
    • Housing managers/officers
    • Voids manager
    • Repairs manager

  3. Estate Services Club

    Details

The Estate Services Club is pleased to announce its first meeting of 2021. These groups give attendees the chance to network and share best practice around a given theme.

There is an ongoing challenge for estate services teams around how to introduce more consistency into service charges and ensure fairness for tenants. Many are dealing with legacy issues or complexities brought about by mergers between organisations with very different terms.

This session will explore what best practice models for service charges have been developed and how landlords and estates teams can begin to move towards making changes that will bring transparency and uniformity to service charges.

10:00-11:00 – Experts Emma Towler and Jackie Dicken will take you through a standard model of service charging, what a change programme on this looks like and how you can influence your chief executive to make it happen.

11:00-12:00 – Discussion and questions from members.

Providing a better service to residents through technology (in association with Gridizen)

    Details

The past year has seen a considerable increased in the use of technology as the touchpoint between housing providers and their residents. With many organisations developing or investing in software for engagement and operations such as repairs, rent payments etc, there is a much bigger focus on the opportunities and limitations in this area. The use of technology, whether to streamline systems, or to allow residents more visibility and control, are there to enable Housing staff to provide a better, more efficient service to their residents.

Gridizen have been working with the housing sector for a number of years to develop software specifically aimed at helping organisations to work more efficiently and effectively with their residents. During this time, they have conducted extensive research into the existing platforms available as well as the gaps. One of the issues that has consistently cropped up is that Housing software is often developed with minimal input from residents or frontline staff until the “testing” phases, after which much of the functionality has been built. This roundtable is an opportunity for front-line staff and residents to provide useful input as to what they want from software, apps etc, and to look at the opportunities available to meet these needs. This research will help to fuel the future of housing software to ensure that it meets the needs of both staff and residents.

  9. Tackling racial inequality – the business, social and moral argument for change (a roundtable discussion)

    Details

2020 highlighted the need for advancing equality, diversity, and inclusion in our organisations. It was dominated by a virus which was originally described as ‘indiscriminate’, but in fact served to throw into sharp relief existing inequalities in society. The virus did discriminate by taking more lives from BAME communities as well as highlighting the social divide which in some cases went largely unnoticed. Then after the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter Movement, racial injustice has been very prominent in all our thoughts, and for those of us who are white, how we can be better allies. This is not just about racial equality it is about equality for everyone in our society.

This roundtable discussion, hosted by Marilyn Bryan-Jones and Colin Heyman, will look at what people and organisations can do to address these issues.

    It will cover:

    • Historical context of people of colour in the UK
    • Experiences of people of colour in housing
    • What white people can do as allies
    • What organisations can do, and the use of a systematic, organisation-wide approach to embed improved equality, diversity, and inclusion practice.

There will be opportunities for people to ask questions and time in small groups for participants to consider what they have heard, and plan what they can do in their own organisations.
