Almshouse Charity Director

Established in 1928, we are a small, almshouse charity in Newbury. Originally, we owned and managed just four properties but thanks to the vision and determination of our current Chair we are nearing completion of sixteen, newly-built, one and two bedroomed flats on a town-centre site. We expect to allocate the homes in April 2018 and unusually for an almshouse charity, we are not limited to housing older people.
The Charity became a registered provider in 2017 and we want to ensure that we meet our residents’ expectations as well as the regulator’s requirements. We are looking for people to join our board to make sure that we have the skills and experience needed to help us move forward with confidence, especially as some of our long-serving Directors plan to retire within the next couple of years.
Applicants will need to be committed to social housing in general and interested in almshouses in particular. A background in housing management would be useful but not essential as we are also looking for Directors who will bring management experience from other sectors and/or a background in accountancy, law and website design and maintenance.
Board members will join one of our two sub-committees (Residents and Property). This is a hands-on role, our Directors manage the Charity with some part-time administrative support. The Chairman and Treasurer authorise payments in accordance with the Directors’ wishes. Directors are unpaid and the time commitment is in the region of 10 days a year.

All meetings are in central Newbury, which is well served by train services from London Paddington and just a short distance from junction 13 of the M4.
The closing date is 1 December 2017 and interviews will be arranged shortly afterwards.
Please note this is a voluntary role and the expected committment time is circa 10 days per year.
