Housing Quality Network briefing – When boards fail: Carillion and beyond – a guide to effective board appraisal

HQN is delighted to welcome Colin Wiles as the latest contributor to our weekly member exclusive briefings. His two part series on effective board appraisals can now be downloaded by members of the Housing Quality Network.

Part one of this briefing, published last week, covered the regulatory requirements for appraisal and review, and included some sector case studies and a look at the Carillion collapse. It highlighted important lessons the sector must learn regarding good governance, focusing on high profile instances in which there were large scale failings at board level.

The second part, published this week, provides tips and informative case studies on what your organisation needs to consider, and provides a survey members can use to highlight areas where they excel and where they need to improve.

Members can access these from our briefings archive here.

HQN is delighted to have Colin on board. This is the first in a series of exclusive briefings he will be writing for the network in the coming weeks. Colin is, of course, best known as a blogger for Inside Housing and is a regular contributor to other publications including The Guardian and 24housing.

Look out too for an upcoming series of articles, exclusive to HQN, from another top housing writer and blogger Jules Birch. More details soon.
