1. The art of leadership – harnessing personal power (two-day residential)

    Details

    The art of leadership

“Leadership bestows on us an awesome power. We can use it to over-power, de-power or out-power others and in doing so we will break them. Alternatively we can use this power to enable, empower and grow people, winning their hearts and minds.” David Gilbert-Smith, former SAS Officer and Founder of the Leadership Trust

Building new affordable homes, maintaining existing stock and a relentless focus on health and safety are just a few of the many challenges facing our sector. Add to this a constantly changing operating environment and the inevitable need to do more with less and things are tough.

So inspiring the best performance from your people is critical.

That’s why we’ve partnered with Leadership Trust as their special forces heritage means dealing with tough situations is in their DNA.

The Leadership Trust has four decades' worth of experience working with some of the UK's top blue-chip companies.

Their team of experts help people to find their own leadership style, enabling people to perform under pressure and deliver results.

Taking place over two days at the Leadership Trust's magnificent headquarters near Ross-on-Wye in rural Herefordshire, this residential course has been specifically designed for established housing leaders and those with the potential to become one. The course is a chance to:

    • Build your personal leadership style, raising awareness of what can hinder your performance
    • Establish an understanding of how your leadership style can support or hinder the performance of your team
    • Connect your leadership style with challenges at work so that you can practise being at your best under pressure.

The residential programme includes a series of workshops and practical challenges designed to help develop key leadership skills and your own personal leadership style.

    Key sessions include:

    • The art of leadership within the housing sector
    • Performance under pressure
    • Ethos and culture
    • Adopting positive leadership behaviours.

PLEASE NOTE: The price of this residential course includes accommodation, a three-course dinner on the first evening, and all other meals/refreshments.

    Places are strictly limited.

    Value for Money masterclass

    Details

    Value for Money masterclass

Need some help with what the new VfM Standard and Code of Practice really means for your organisation?

Come along to our practical VfM workshop next month to gain a better understanding of what the Regulator of Social Housing expects.

Do you have all bases covered on VfM?

While housing associations no longer need to produce a VfM self-assessment, they will need to meet the reporting requirements of the new Standard. This includes the publishing of performance data in annual accounts against metrics set out by the regulator, and how it compares to your peers.

In addition, providers are now able to set performance targets to reflect social outcomes, appropriate to their objectives. But how do you make this work to your advantage?

Delivered by HQN's Housing Finance Network Lead Associate Ian Parker, this half-day masterclass will help you extract the detail from your own accounts/reports to ensure your returns are accurate and relevant.

To make sure you get 'optimal benefit' from the day, Ian will also be on-hand to answer your specific VfM queries. You can send your questions to us in advance at: hqn@hqnetwork.co.uk

There’s not much time before final accounts are signed off – make sure you comply with the new requirements.

    We will cover:

    • How to make sure you calculate ALL of the metrics correctly
    • How you explain trends in performance on these metrics (particularly where definitions have changed)
    • What you must put in the accounts (OK the requirement for a long VfM report has been abolished – but what do you put in its place?)
    • How you deal with VfM at an IDA (where the probing is intense)
    • The new requirement to demonstrate that your decisions lead to “optimal benefit” (this WILL mean more thorough option appraisals for many)
    • How to get your board up to speed on VfM – “we’re not so worried about the metrics as such, but we are concerned that your board don’t know their own numbers well enough or what they mean” – is a common refrain from the IDA teams.

    Who should attend?

This event is essential for those responsible for reporting VfM in the accounts, regulatory compliance, appraising the board and ensuring VfM is embedded in the business, including:

    • Finance directors
    • Finance teams
    • Performance teams
    • Governance teams.

    Details

    Resilience clinic 2018

As social housing providers become increasingly complex and commercial entities, how do you ensure you are prepared for every eventuality?

The role of risk management and business continuity go hand-in-hand and have arguably never been more important.

Dangers lurk around every corner. From winter working to the roll out of Universal Credit - plans need to be in place and well communicated so everyone involved with the organisation understands they have a role to play.

For our 2018 Resilience Clinics, HQN is teaming up with specialist risk management company Commercial Initiatives to deliver practical advice on how to deliver a better programme for your staff, residents and other stakeholders.

The day will focus on the new Business Continuity Good Practice Guidelines for 2018 and how organisations can benefit from adopting the 'bow tie' approach to risk management.

The fully interactive event will also give delegates the opportunity to participate in a mini exercise highlighting how a major incident impacts the whole organisation and why contingency planning is so important.

    Sessions will focus on:

    • The 'bow tie' approach to risk management

HQN Cymru annual summit 2018 – I'd rather be in Wales

    Details

    HQN Cymru annual summit 2018

Twenty years after the Governance of Wales Act paved the way for devolution, we are exhibiting growing maturity and greater confidence in our ability to fashion our own solutions to major challenges. This distinct approach is arguably more evident in the housing sector than any other.

In 2018 this means government and partners:

    • Share an understanding of the need to ‘join up’ housing; both as an interconnected system and with other policy areas especially health, social care and economic development
    • Recognise that the focus has to be on delivery, including stretching targets on new affordable housing and combatting homelessness
    • Understand that the need to develop and sustain confidence in this approach through effective governance and clear lines of accountability.

HQN Cymru’s second annual summit will focus on each of these themes. Sessions will include:

    • Views from the Welsh Government on key challenges – as policy maker and regulator
    • Radical new thinking on the future from CHC and Housing Leadership Cymru
    • Getting real about joined up action – the challenge posed by the Future Generations Commissioner
    • Sustaining partnership working – delivering targets in even more challenging times
    • New initiatives to develop a future workforce
    • Where’s the camera? Challenges and opportunities from TPAS, Cymorth Cymru, Tai Pawb and the National landlords Association perspectives.

    Confirmed speakers:

Chair – Keith Edwards, HQN Cymru Lead Associate
Key note – Rebecca Evans AM, Minister for Housing and Regeneration, Welsh Government
Stuart Ropke, Chief Executive, Community Housing Cymru
Sophie Howe, The Future Generations Commissioner for Wales
    Alistair McIntosh, Chief Executive, HQN
Matt Callanan, Founder, Making Good Happen
Noreen Blanluet, Director, Co-Production Network Wales
Richard Williams, Chief Executive, Community Foundation in Wales.

  3. HQN annual conference 2018: 12 months later – can we go from disaster to pride?

    Details

    HQN Annual Conference 2018

It's one year on from the Grenfell Tower disaster. But what has actually changed?

In the aftermath of the fire, politicians promised a sea change in the way this country looked at social housing and the people who live in it.

Likewise, our own sector leaders promised to make tenants feel safe in their homes. Lessons would be learned, money would be invested. We all said 'never again'.

But hand on heart can we really say that a tragedy like this won't be repeated? Are all our homes now safe? Have we put a stop to the stigma surrounding tenants? Or are we slipping down the agenda as politicians squabble over Brexit?

Some tenants told Dominic Raab they were proud of their homes. How do we build a sector that everyone can be proud of? And how do we pay for it?

This year's HQN annual conference will cover all of that and more. It's timely too. There is a desperate thirst for new ideas – we’ll try and quench it.

Mixing key note speakers with topical debate, you'll get to hear from:

    • Alistair McIntosh, HQN Chief Executive, on new tenant-focused approaches to running organisations and better governance
    • Jane Everton, Director, MHCLG on the Social Housing Green Paper
    • Melanie Onn, Shadow Housing Minister, on the Labour Housing Green Paper
    • Leslie Channon, Chair, A Voice for Tenants
    • Keith Edwards, HQN Associate, on Lessons from Grenfell (drawing on his recent work at Kensington and Chelsea Council)
    • Dr Tim Brown, Senior Research Associate in Housing and Local Government, De Montfort University, on the future of council house building (sharing exclusive research carried out with the LGA)
    • Dr Beth Watts, Senior Research Fellow, Heriot-Watt University on the use of fixed term tenancies (sharing exclusive research)
    • Steve Pettitt, Group Head of Health and Safety, L&Q, on the sector's response to Grenfell 12 months on and whether the Hackitt Review goes far enough.
