The strategic housing conference

A future role for local authorities

A challenging increase in homelessness, a rising PRS sector and an aging population are just some of the topics that local authorities are having to consider at the moment. This is in a climate where budgets are still very much limited. As such, the Strategic Network has designed its first Local Authority Conference to bring together councils to discuss what they’re doing and offer them an overview of the wider picture.

Sessions planned include:

The Housing Market in 2018 and government’s Housing Policy Response

An overview of the housing market helping to identify what is driving the national policy agenda.  Population changes, economic influences and Brexit all contribute.  The government’s ambitions to ‘Fix the Broken Housing Market’ will be considered alongside the potential impact of initiatives such as the launch of Homes England.

Delivering 300,000 new homes per year – is this achievable?

The government have set out an ambition to deliver 300,000 new homes per year by the mid 2020s.  We will hear from a Planning expert about how the planning system will respond to this challenge including some of the detail strategic housing authorities are likely to grapple with – potential changes to SHMA methodology, Local Plans, Strategic sites and garden cities add to the planning and delivery challenge.

'Working in partnership to deliver more homes – the Bristol experience’

A case study on how Bristol is responding to their housing needs. This session is being delivered by Paul Smith, cabinet member for housing at Bristol City Council

Rent to Buy Housing – new ways to meet affordable housing needs

Hear how developments of Rent to Buy housing have helped to meet affordable housing needs and consider the potential future role of this tenure.

Supported housing – Navigating the Funding Maze to meet the needs of older people and other vulnerable groups

A way forward for the funding arrangements for supported housing is starting to emerge but strategic housing authorities and providers will need to consider how to meet the needs of vulnerable people in future.  This session will also consider the impact of the ageing population.  Increased longevity is something to celebrate but provides challenges for housing, health and social care providers.

Tackling and reducing homelessness

Homelessness is the most acute form of housing need and has increased significantly in recent years.  Hear about the forthcoming Homelessness Reduction Act and consider the likely impact in your areas.
